Nova Peris-Kneebone - 1st Indigenous Olympic Gold Medalist

Nova was the first Aboriginal Australian in history to win an Olympic gold medal [hockey] in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

 

Later switching to athletics, Nova is one of the few Australians to have competed at Olympic level in 2 sports, as she again competed in the 400 metres at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

 

She is also the first Australian athlete to win international gold medals in two different sports - Olympic hockey and Commonwealth Games track and field.

 

Born in the Northern Territory on February 25, 1971, Nova [as of 2007] is one of only three Australian mothers to have won an Olympic gold medal.
