With a very unusual background for a figure competitor, Markeeta enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in 1994 and served for 11 years, and is now employed as a coal mine mobile equipment operator in Queensland. She started out training and racing outrigger canoes at the age of 15 and has also competed in long distance kayaking, short course and triathlons.

She represented Australia at the 2008 FAME World Championships in Canada, and is trained by top Aussie figure pro Rosa-Maria Romero and is sponsored by ASN.
