Yes - it matters.
Don’t fall into the trap of thinking “it is a physique show”, facial attractiveness matters. Unless an individual is astounding ugly, professional hair and makeup will make most women look simply stunning.
If you can afford it, get a professional makeup artist to do your makeup for the show. With all due respect, many competitors obviously did their own makeup and do not have the first clue about makeup – and it shows.
As they say, 'a picture speaks a thousand words' - so here are some examples of the wonders of makeup:

If those photos don't convince you, nothing will!

Things you will need:
1] Prepare your skin, it should be cleansed and exfoliated 5 - 10 minutes prior, and eyebrows waxed/plucked.
2] Apply your false lashes, they look fantastic onstage and are the norm at pro level. They are quite inexpensive and can be picked up in most malls. For stage, the strip ones are best [not individual].They can be tricky to apply and require practice. Use tweezers and apply them. Be sure to only use specific eyelash glue for safety. The package will have detailed directions. When you see them on the shelves, they look very clownish, but once applied they create a great effect. If you happen to be on a very high budget, the semi permanent eyelash extensions available at salons [$150 or so] are great.
3] Apply concealer to areas that are darker than the rest of your face. This normally applies to under eye area, outer corner of eyes, and any blemishes. As this is for stage, you can be a bit heavy handed.
4] Apply foundation; use a makeup sponge for clearest application. Blend well in the hairline and neck areas. Again this can, and should be, rather heavy handed for stage.
5] Apply eyebrow pencil. With eyebrows lighter is normally better than darker. Unless you have dark black skin, go with a medium brown eyebrow pencil or lighter. Most women have more density in the inner edges of their eyebrows, so it is generally advisable to apply more heavy-handed to the outer edges. Be sure the pencil has a very sharp point for the best look.
6] Apply a neutral eyeshadow over lids and over 3/4 of the area underneath your eyebrows. Unless you are really good with applying makeup stick with neutral shades like beiges, taupes and browns. Very few women can carry off coloured eyeshadow unless it is applied professionally. If you are wearing a certain color suit, you can at times use the matching eyeshadow. Sometimes it works great, other times it does not. Wearing uncorrelated eyeshadow, such as a pink suit and blue eyeshadow generally does not work. Again, these things all come down to personal taste - so try out what works for you.
7] Apply a very light eyeshadow to underneath the browbone [as in just under your eyebrows]. Basically a thin line. You can apply this quite heavily, whereas up close you can see a distinctive white line, but on stage it will look very natural.
8] Use a much darker shadow to apply a line of eyeshadow in the crease of your eyes.
9] Apply blush. It should go from the cheekbones sweeping out the temples. Do NOT overdo this, as it does create a clow- like appearance if you do.
10] If you are not lean enough in the face, try contouring your face to appear leaner. To do this, apply a dark blush in the beige family to the area underneath where you applied your blush.
11] If you have applied false lashes, you do not need to apply mascara. If you have elected to forgo the lashes, apply 2 -3 coats of mascara now. Use black, even if you are very pale, as that is the best look for stage. Wipe the wand on a tissue to remove excess residue, then apply mascara from the base of your lashes up. Quickly comb your lashes with an eyelash comb right after to separate them [do NOT comb them once dry]. Let them dry, then repeat once or twice. You can go quite heavy with mascara for stage. False lashes really do give a far better stage look however, and are the norm for models, actresses, top fitness/figure pros however so we really recommend them.
